Firm History

Hélène Dion Investment Management Inc. (“HDIM”) is a completely independent, Montreal-based, private portfolio manager founded in 2007 and wholly owned by Hélène Dion.  As a small company, HDIM is organized to operate at high levels of performance, prudence and efficiency.  The company consists of four talented, highly-skilled and experienced individuals:  Hélène Dion, President and Portfolio Manager; Vicky Fragiskos, Director of Portfolio Administration; Tyler Millson Taylor, Portfolio Manager and Trader, and Dan Zhao, Portfolio and Research Analyst and Associate Compliance Officer.  Hélène Dion, Tyler Millson Taylor and Dan Zhao hold the CFA designation.  Specializing in a conservative, income optimization approach to portfolio management for wealthy individuals, couples, families, corporations and non-profit organizations, the company is registered as a portfolio manager in the provinces of Québec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Investment Philosophy

At HDIM, we are passionate about growing and protecting clients’ wealth.  We strongly believe in the superiority of income-oriented strategies over the long run, whether income is withdrawn or reinvested.  We also emphasize the importance of growing inflation-adjusted income.  Therefore, asset allocations for clients are structured to favour asset classes generating real returns:  equities with steadily growing dividends; real estate; real-return bonds for non-taxable accounts; and other inflation-sensitive assets.  We offer our portfolio management services exclusively on a segregated, discretionary basis.  This provides us the flexibility to accommodate various sizes of mandates and different levels of complexity or sophistication.  We are particularly experienced in managing several portfolios for a given client or for accounts that form relationships.

Reporting and Communication with Clients

Our independence and small size do give us advantages over the larger players, not only at the portfolio management level but also with respect to reporting and communication.  On a daily basis, our clients can always reach us by telephone, by e-mail or they can quickly confirm a meeting and pass by our office.  Our quarterly reports include detailed holdings and transactions reports, year-to-date capital gain reports and daily-weighted total rates of return.  A personalized covering letter summarizes the evolution of portfolios, their overall performance and the activity of the past quarter.  From time to time, we provide a “questions and answers” format report with our view of markets and relevant events.  This allows us to convey a more in-depth explanation of our outlook and to address questions we perceive as interesting to our clients.
