Firm History

Our Firm was founded in 1952 and has been providing investment management services to individual and institutional investors since that date. We are completely independent with no corporate affiliations, and ownership of our Firm has always resided with the senior active staff.  Since our founding, our business strategy has remained focused on the effective management of segregated portfolios that are individually tailored for each of our clients.

Investment Philosophy and Approach

Our goal is to sustain and enhance our clients’ financial well-being by adopting investment strategies which best suit their particular needs and expectations.  Since individual circumstances make each investor unique, we believe their investments should be structured to meet their individual goals and circumstances.  This requires an understanding of our clients’ financial position, investment objectives, tax considerations and special requirements.  All portfolios are individually constructed and managed by an investment counselor, who is also a senior officer of the Firm.  Each holds the CFA designation and has extensive experience in research and security analysis.

Our investment approach is a conservative one in which opportunity is carefully weighed against potential risks.  We follow a consistent, disciplined method when selecting investments, with a focus on quality and value.  Fundamental to our strategy is a long-term, low-turnover approach which avoids taking extreme positions. Emphasis is placed on companies that have a strong financial position and quality management.

Only prudent investments which suit the individual objectives of each client are considered.  We believe security selection should be based on independent thought, which is free of any possible conflicts.  Our independence allows us to offer unbiased and objective investment advice and provides us the freedom to transact business on behalf of our clients with a wide variety of investment dealers.  As such, we have access to a broad range of their services, which are used to supplement our in-house resources and other independent sources.

Reporting and Communication with Clients

The day-to-day operations of each portfolio and communication with the client are the responsibility of the investment counselor, who is also directly involved in the design of the Firm’s overall investment strategy.  As there is no separation between these roles, this gives the client a direct line of communication on all matters involving the investment management of their portfolio.

Comprehensive quarterly written reports are prepared which summarize investment performance and relate it to the appropriate market benchmarks.  A detailed breakdown of the portfolio’s assets is included, as well as information that is helpful for bookkeeping and tax purposes.  Our reports are easy to read and include a commentary on developments in the security markets.  By maintaining a person-to-person relationship with our clients, our advice is ongoing, which allows us to respond to changes in their particular investment objectives.
